Nutritional problems in Indonesia, both under and over nutrition, remains significant public health issue. Riskesdas’ results showed that about one third of Children of underfive year of age suffered from stunting, a nutritional status that reflectfs a child’s long history of undernutrition. On the other hand the prevalence of overnutrition, among children and adults, is becoming mopre obvious. To add to the problems, several nutrition-related non communicable diseases such as hypertention and diabetes are high. The evidence of the significant contribution of nutrition on the quality of humen resources is mounting, warrant special attention. The availability of various “unhealthy” food with attractive packaging combined with lack of knowledge on balanced diet and healthy lifestyle among population might contribute to the facts. The Ministry of National Education, i.e. the Directorate General of Higher Education, recognizes the potential of school community to become a link of agents of changes in good nutrition practice towards their family and society, which eventually will improve the nutritional status of the population.
The program has been expanded to 10 more schools in Depok city during year 2010. Using the same IEC media the teachers from the 10 schools were trained by Master Trainers who were trained in advance, to become trainers. The trained teachers conducted follow on IEC activities to the students, which is expected to be continued as part of their teaching activities using the new messages. From this activities at least about 1000 students of grade 4 and 5 in the 10 schools have been trained on nutrition and balanced diet, in the year 2010. We are expecting that the activities will be continued for the next grade 4 and 5 students.
In 2011, the activities have been expanded through training of trainers for teachers from 60 schools from Depok city and 20 Schools from Bekasi district. We can anticipate that the students of the 80 schools will get trained continuously by the trained teachers, which eventually improve their KAP and nutritional status
